Stop Action 60mph

Trying to achieve blur close up. This car passed at about 60 mph+ I had push the shutter when he was about 30 feet away. I had looked for blur but got stop action. The sun is in the northern sky brightly shinning on my subject

Centered

Sometimes you really need to center your photo shot based on the subject.
In photography the prevailing theory of perspective that is pleasing and dynamic calls for placing key subjects in an area in one of the four off-center grid points (like a tic-tac-toe grid.) This DPS assignment was to find a subject where centering was used. As I pondered this, the concept of a good sight picture in hunting and teaching marksmanship brought to mind this key aspect of "centered" and hence this subject

Street

Carroll Parkway. This is "my street" after the little snow we had yesterday. The assignment for the DPS this week had been street and so I decided to capture it. It is routinely filled with cars parked for the high school at the end of this section or Baker Park events and use. This shot is looking East from the end of my apartment building. My humble pickup is the only vehicle in sight. Note the attractive street lamps the park has throughout. Carroll Creek runs along beside the entire length of the Parkway.

Sunday Morning ARising

This weekend's photo assignment is "good morning." For this shot there was little prep. I did use flash as there is little only low natural light with the overcast skies so early. I awake in Zetta's 3/4 bed she bought from a friend in Beattyville a few years ago, which I brought to Carroll Creek. It was probably made in the 30s. One will not find the old springs nor a mattress in stores or even on the internet any longer. I searched high and low. I built a strong mattress platform of 1x4s that sits snugly between the bed rails an have a aerobed upon it which fits perfectly. I recall that Daddy had an old 3/4 bed at the lake in Harrodsburg and may have had a special-order mattress. The emblem behind my head is an oval with a vase, but the entire oval is painted brown so that it is not readily recognizable. There is another at the foot rail which I will probably paint as a project.

Something Blue

This week's assignment from DPS is for something blue. I had been looking around this week for something unusually stunning and observed blue lights at night as appealing. Because I was shooting at night, I noted blur with the slightest movement. I steadied the camera against the side of my camper for this shot. I'm ever impressed with the performance of this little blackberry curve with its tiny lens and 2meg capacity. As an aside the restaurant has good gyros :)

Roddy Creek Covered Bridge c 1856

The last stop of the historic Covered Bridges of Frederick County today. The historians say at one time there were 52 of these bridges in the county now time to find me a little country inn for a bit of soup to warm me

Lows Station Bridge c1848

There is a war marker here that recounts the march of Howard's XI Corps in late June of 1863. Destination--unknown, but stop Lee and the ANV. They had a rendezvous in the town of Gettysburg. After Gettysburg in early July, US forces again passed over this old bridge and Meade encamped just down the road at Creagerstown.

Utica Covered Bridge

Frederick County Md. C 1850
This bridge originally spanned the Monocacy River nearby, but was swept away in 1889. Locals moved it (what remained) to this protected spot over the gentle Fishing Creek. Stout at 30,000 lbs. The interior showed a rainbow like of design for support of thick oak

Point and Shoot Cameras

DPS Assignment
The prime is the Nikon Coolpix L12 Digital - a frequent companion (SN30273195). The legacy is a new to very lightly used Yashica Zoom Image 90 Super 35mm (SN307930) I got it for $5.00 on ebay. Both have a close up capability but nether has any manual override capability for shutter speed, ASA, or aperture. I have been pleasantly surprised with the sharpness on the Yashica on the first roll. It also seems durable as I've dropped it twice on the carpet with no apparent I'll affect. The next roll may tell.

Camera #1

Yashica FX-3 Super 2000
(Digital Photography School Assignment)

This is my prime camera. I got it for about $5.00 on ebay at a real steal last year. It is all mechanical with the light meter being the only electrical component and not required. Shown with it is a 55-200mm Sigma Zoom and a really sharp 28mm wide angle Kalimar lens with a Macro capability. - I have a 135 Zoom in route for portraiture work. The Prime lens shown is the Yashica 50mm 1:1.9 I also have a 50mm 1:2 and may add the fast 1:1.4 some day. The strap dates from the late 70s when zetta and I bought our first 35mm single lens reflex camera. This display uses a gray sweater at about the 18 % gray and a natural daylight bulb at 6500K.

Mellow Mushroom

Tonight we ventured to a pizza parlor called the "Mellow Mushroom". The walls carried murals like the one shown. I was reminded of the song "Mellow Yellow". I bet a hippie started this place. I didn't notice any payote pizzas on the menu, but I muse it was part of the idea behind this place

Our Confederate Dead

Salisbury Park. Columbus Georgia
The marble memorial stands on Broadway not far from town in the park that runs the length of the brick drive. It has on the side with the name ths shield of the CSA and above it the Georgia symbol with "Constitution" inscribed, flower bouquets, laurel leaves, the column has cannon balls around the next level and cannon, pike, and sword. The cannon points downward. The east side reads "IN MEMORIAM" and "no truth is lost for which the true are weeping nor dead for which they died" to the south side "There glory shall not be forgotten" and "erected by the ladies of the memorial association 1879 to honor Confederate soldiers who died to repel unconstitutional invasion. To protect the right reserved to the people. And to perpetuate forever the sovereignty of the states. The eastside reads HONOR TO THE BRAVE "Gather the sacred dust of warriors tried and true who bore the flag of our nations trust and fell in the cause tho lost, still just and died for me and you. Bus Terminal Waitresses

Columbus Georgia.
After church this morning at St George's Anglican, I joined Pat and Jim for a visit to the civil war museum. Then we retired to the old bus terminal downtown. We sat just beneath this mural. There was an old photo dated 1942 with these waitresses holding stuffed animals. The Terminal is behind them. Good food. I enjoyed some ribs with cornbread, blackeyed peas and fried apples

New Beginnings (photo assignment)

I've resolved to attempt to complete the weekly photo assignment from digital photography school. This was last week's assignment of New Beginnings. Well, the only thing I found that appeared somewhat new in these cold January days was this group of ornamental cabbage. Note that this particular shot is through a window; hence the light image to the side. Note also the long shadows from the morning sun in the southern skies. One thing that is certainly new is the tilt of the earth moving back after winter solstice and longer warmer days to come

Benning Chapel

I am enjoying a nice visit at the Fort Benning museum. They have refurbished some of the WWII temporary buildings that were the same as I first used when the 2/502d If returned from Vietnam to fort Campbell. This chapel is still in active use. Also saw Patton's Quarters. I appreciated the museum. It stands as a witness to those who have passed through these gates and to infantrymen of every generation. Uncle Earl was a training officer here in the 40s and son Tyson earned his wings here.
