Main Street Renaissance

Berlin Maryland.
This is a late 19th Century town by all appearances. Berlin sits astride the Maryland and Delaware RR line along the seaboard. The town has taken pains to coordinate the exterior buildings to enhance the beautiful brick work in the older buildings that dominate the architecture. Stucco and frame-like buildings are painted in hues of terra cotta and sand and the affect is very nice, very appealing. My little hometown back in Kentucky is struggling to do a renaissance of its main street. I recall back in 1987-1994 or so I was involved in various Army projects that used this same approach in developing Communities of Excellence: complimentary colors, signage, and services. Note the little touches here: the drain pipe and trim compliment the theme of the brick town. Signage like that of the late 19th century-fairly uniform in size and appearance, period lamp posts, sand colored door and panels reflect the mortar, terra cotta flower pot and period wagon full of flowers. Yet their could be some minor improvements still (trash can color and design clashes within environment), the PNC Bank signage seems out of place and time as does the bright green 2-Hour paring sign. In the Army the standards were regulation. In a town like this the must become ordinance and be enforced to succeed, something many are unwilling to commit to this level of community coordination and cooperation.

Art Appreciation in Maryland

I have discovered the beach is not just about fun and such; it is about culture and high society. This is the word-famous Ocean Gallery (note the Batmobile is parked just outside). I sit just across the street where there is another cultural event: an outdoor concert on the patio of the famous Paul Revere Restaurant where a high-speed band plays the famous ballad of Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd while the folk sip their brew. Our lovely waitresses are attired in attractive beach wear to blend in with the guests and keep the folk well provisioned. BRAVO BRAVO.

Ocean City

The Beach - Memorial Day Weekend
The boardwalk is very busy today. Weather is cool and windy and water temperature a bit cool. Lots of folk on the beach but few in the water. Just south of my position is a barrier island and state park with no development. I'll visit there likely on Monday. It is good just to be here and enjoy the beach for a respite the weekend

Army/Defense Comptrollership Program 50th

Arlington Virginia.
About 100 Alumni gather here this evening not far from the Pentagon for a 50th Anniversary Celebration. The eldest was 84 years old and a member of class VI. I graduated in Class XXXVII. There were about six class photos and one was of my class. I stand second from the left on the first rank next to my fellow MSC officer, Mike Tate. The program is now open to all the services and DoD.

Museum

One of the nice things about Frederick is its history which includes the War Between The States. On Patrick Street is a museum dedicated to medicine as practiced during the war. Both armies marched down this street on occasion en route to some battlefield. The nurse here is Mary Ann Bickerdyke, the Cyclone in Calico. The lieutenant is but a symbol of the many wounded

Martinsburg VA Hospital

Nice folk up here at the VA. This has seen a lot of veterans. Having started as one of the WWII Army hospitals in 44, it has served veterans through four major conflicts who still come here today

Fishers

Carroll Creek at College Street
Look closely and you will see two different types of Fishers below the little dam. The mate to the smaller fisher is in the photo as well above the dam and near a tree. The smaller fishers have two long feathers that come from their head. This is unusual for Carroll Creek but very welcomed. I hope we will get some more species to visit our little park

Greek Folk Dance

I determined I ought go back to the Greek Fest to refuel after my run. While sipping a Mythos Beer with my Gyro I was delighted to see these old folk form a Dance Line to the music and singing of the band

Main Street Fest

Mt Airy -- Main Street is packed on this sunny afternoon with festivities and food. A rock band on one corner. Another fellow sings early 50s songs before rock and roll and a man and a woman pick up the swing beat and dance in the street. I think of how little has really changed through the ages as folk have gathered in the spring in towns to celebrate another winter's passing and nature's turn to fair weather with the promise of fun.

Armed Forces Day 10K

Odom Gym-Fort Detrick
I set a new PR today. I ran 10K in about the same time as I used to run 10 miles. Good news is that I ran the entire race on my bum foot. This is the 20th running of this race and there will be many more as Fort Detrick is growing under BRAC. Next is the retiree sponsored breakfast and SOS

Greek Festival

Each year just a few blocks up the sweet the Orthodox Church has a Greek Festival. The entertainment this evening is a Greek band with traditional music and dancers; and of course most importantly -- great Greek food.

Culler Lake Mist

A slight mist arises from Culler Lake just across from my abode and Frederick High School, and is located in Baker Park. We had a cool front and evening shower a few minutes ago that caused the mist. The little lake is fed by Carroll Creek.

Foaming Fountain

Baker Park - Frederick
Or so I thought at first. The fountain is covered with pollen. The light shinning through and the clearing about the center give an eerie affect

Flood Basin

Baker Park - Frederick
Benz Street flood control point. This reservoir is the first defense. There is another man-made catch like this one next to it. After that the park itself contains flood waters behind a six foot levee

Raging Creek

Carroll Creek - Frederick
It has been raining off and on since the marathon and the creek across from the house is up and fast. This sort of thing used to be a problem in downtown Frederick, but is under control now through some engineering to prevent flooding in town

St Michael's ACC Altar

Frederick -- A couple of months ago I posted a photo of the Lutheran church used by the little Anglo Catholic Church I frequent in Frederick. The Lutheran altar with this picture of Christ above is show here with the Anglo-Catholic treatments including altar cards, the veiled Communion set, and the Crucifix that replaces the plain cross. The card on the left side is the Last Gospel -- John 1, a practice of the Latin rite of the Church.

Frederick Marathon

Sunday morning run of 26.2 miles & a half marathon too. Carroll parkway is jammed as the runners move me back into the court yard run up off the road . I just got to cheer on my workmate, a consummate marathoner and triathlete. This morning she introduces her young niece to the half distance. The weather is perfect: cool in the 50s, overcast, a very slight precipitation, and wind maybe 3-5mph. Last night I ran my first race as a part of this series: the Frederick 5K at my workmate's encouragement. Finished in the middle top half. Not bad at 59.
