Shrove Tuesday

I am at Zetta's favorite Frederick Restaurant tonight --Mountain Diner--enjoying a big pancake meal before starting a Lenten Fast at midnight--Ash Wednesday. The Lenten Fast in England was for eggs, butter, meat (same as it was for the ancient church and is still for Orthodox) and so the folk would clean out the houses of these items in a big pancake meal. In addition to giving up something for lent, it is appropriate to "give" something "Shrove" was a form of the verb shriven, to be forgiven, as the folk would repair to churches to meet with their village priest in confession.
