While out today antique shopping I notice this old cart with its built-in cage. I found the play of the shadows against the wall to be interesting. The wheels have a peculiar metal binding on the that has ridges, as if the had tread. I suppose this was a poultry farmers market wagon and by the height I would imagine he brought geese to market.

Shrove Tuesday
I am at Zetta's favorite Frederick Restaurant tonight --Mountain Diner--enjoying a big pancake meal before starting a Lenten Fast at midnight--Ash Wednesday. The Lenten Fast in England was for eggs, butter, meat (same as it was for the ancient church and is still for Orthodox) and so the folk would clean out the houses of these items in a big pancake meal. In addition to giving up something for lent, it is appropriate to "give" something "Shrove" was a form of the verb shriven, to be forgiven, as the folk would repair to churches to meet with their village priest in confession.

Walton's Mountains
Monocacy Center.
The Great Blizzard of 2010 is spent and after a day of digging out I figured I'd get out of my "cabin" and restock my pantry with goods at Sam Walton's Country Store along the Monocacy River. I noticed Sam's handiwork with this small mountain range shown above that covers several acres. Three days ago, while doing some research for Brother Zack, I discovered that his (and Zetta's) 4th?-great grandfather Humberston Lyon was a constable and successful tobacco farmer here when it was called "Monocacy Hundred" in about 1735 -- before there was a Fredericktowne. He likely came here in the great Ulster immigration. I've no doubt Humberston saw tough winters too, but I'll bet he never saw anything like these little mountains.

Blizzard of 2010
Carroll Creek
One gets a pretty good perspective of the snow accumulation with this park bench. Yesterday the winds were strong and snow devils swirled about the courtyard. I walk this day. The roads are passable, but my doors are frozen shut. I am relaxing at Starbucks reading "Mere Theology"

Rice and Veggies
I am taking shelter today from the blizzard that has descended on the Mid Atlantic and determined I would create a lunch that would also serve as a subject for this week's Digital Photography School assignment of "Food". This colorful creation has a combination of long and short rice with spices, broccoli, red pepper, beans, and carrots.

Snowy Leaves
Carroll Creek, Frederick
I peered out my living room window this morning to check conditions and spied this tree with its snowy leaves. Today the fort is delayed for two hours while they clear the parking lots. I believe this is our fourth storm and yesterday was mid-winter. I find that some posts never make it. This is a second try

Saint Brigid's Day
I stopped into our Irish Pub on saint Brigid's day and her in her memory got me a stout Guinness. She would approve. Her prayer about a lake of beer is recorded here http://markscarroll.blogspot.com/2009/11/half-half.html
Cheers!
